A Visits To Matthew Ngau Jau’s Uma Landuk Lan-e Tuyang

As we are preparing for Ryan & Mia’s birthday party, my brother in law ask me to join him to collect his custom made Sape from Matthew Ngau Jau, an accomplished and an acclaimed master of the Sape in Singai, Bau. If you need some introduction, read an extract from The Star and please help yourself googling. :)

This is an opportunity I will not miss. So, I grab my camera bag and en-tour the trip. Fast forward to Singai, I had the most honoured and privileged opportunity to meet and spend some time with Mathew Ngau Jau in his home, we spent coffee time in his longhouse home-stay built by Sape master himself and his wife. Mr. Matthew Ngau and his wife is a very friendly people. You will never had a hard time to blend in.

Since, by default, im addicted to photography I shoot as many picture during the visits, but only few managed to be posted here.

In casuals. Testing the tune of the newly crafted Sape. Matthew Ngau also played the whole tune of a song for us to enjoy. I managed to record a video of him playing. Watch the video here.

Sape on the left had travel all around the world alongside Matthew Ngau. The new Sape on the right uses wood known as ‘Lemelai’ and for your info, this Sape will be used in Matthew future performance.

Uma Landuk Lan-e Tuyang (Longhouse for true friends). Longhouse Homestay owned by Matthew Ngau & his wife. Experience Bidayuh cultural diversity in this unique & spacious 5 rooms home-stays. It’s truly ‘Kampungs’ and dont ask for KFC. :)

The entrance to the longhouse.

We spent about two hours chit-chating stuffs about Sape and his other artworks. But most of the time, the conversation goes very casual and before we get off back home, we managed to get a signed copy of his CD release titled ‘The Ngorek’. The record is a collaboration between Matthew Ngau & the late Uchau Bilong. And to wrapped up the visit, we took a picture together with the man, and i prefer to keep that picture to myself only.
